We have been home almost a month, but thanks to excellent information from my brother Keith, we now have a very ambitious RV trip planned. This trip begins with a short family visit in north Texas, then on to New Mexico and Arizona. The fun stuff to be seen traveling in our RV!
HEARTS Veterans Museum of Texas
463 State Highway 75 N.
Huntsville TX 77320
This Museum was our first overnight stop. We’d heard about this Museum and were eager to visit. How great that it’s also a Harvest Host location! HEARTS (helping every American remember through serving) turned out not to simply be a military museum.
Charlotte Oleinik is responsible for the start of this Museum in 1993 by placing a Veterans Day display in a shop window of an antique shop in Huntsville in honor of Brigadier General Ray Lynch, a Huntsville native.
A committee formed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of World War II created an appreciation and awareness of military service in the Huntsville area.
At the request of local schools, Veterans began making presentations at area schools in the late 90s describing their military experiences and displayed memorabilia from those experiences.
As time passed, a local mall displayed these memorabilia. This mall exhibit eventually became an outstanding collection today housed in its purpose-built structure on land donated by the State. Veterans Day, November 11, 2009, the Grand opening was held.
The Museum holds a complimentary breakfast for veterans on the 1st Saturday each month (9 am–11 am). Veterans meet at breakfast and socialize with other veterans. You do not have to be a veteran to participate—the H.E.A.R.T.S. Museum does accept donations to help with the cost of these breakfasts.
We always have spectacular adventures with our Harvest Hosts, every single one. It is impressive to me to encounter such generosity and genuine hospitality from strangers. Generally, hosts are also RV owners/travelers and simply want to share.
Winstar Funtown RV Park
21902 Merle Wolfe Rd
Thackerville, OK 73459
Yes, here we are again at Winstar Funtown RV Park. See earlier posts: WinStar World Casino and Resort was our exciting home base, and No more problems. This park is just so conveniently located, has excellent amenities and large RV sites.
Laundry at WinStar
THE most annoying thing for my pampered, soft-life self is that we always have to go to a laundromat to wash our clothes. We have considered upgrading to a larger RV that includes a washer and dryer. However, the larger RVs cannot get into some of the small places where we enjoy traveling.
The laundromat at WinStar is another feature we genuinely love. Guests can only access the laundry room by using a keycard provided to us at check-in. It is sparklingly clean and has all recent models and all fully operational washers and dryers.
Shuttle to WinStar – another wonderful amenity at WinStar FunTown RV park is the shuttle service to and from the casino!
We will continue to stop here overnight or for a few days as we travel north from home on our trips as it fits our needs every time.
Robertson’s Hams
110 Wanda St.
Marietta, OK 73448
Every time I have driven north to Oklahoma, I have seen billboards advertising Robertson’s ham sandwiches and have always been curious. Robertson’s is in the town of Marietta, reasonably close to the WinStar RV Park.
One day my brother-in-law, Donnie, took us there for lunch! Ham sandwiches are precisely what Robertson’s sells. Plain, no-frills, ham sandwiches! All kinds of other sandwiches are on the menu, and it is a meat market as well. We had a great lunch here.
Sulphur Springs
We had a lot of free time while we were at WinStar visiting family and took the time one day to visit the town of Sulphur Springs.
The Southwest Dairy Museum
1210 Houston
Sulphur Springs, TX 75482
The Southwest Dairy Museum is a museum for the general public and an educational tool for area schools and promotes the area’s dairy industry. It has been existence in Sulphur Springs since 1991. At this Museum, we learned aspects of the dairy business we did not know.
We took an informative self-guided tour of this Museum. A series of exhibits display the life of dairy farming in a rural area before electricity became available.
Bonus: an old-fashioned soda fountain is inside the Museum. Although we were only able to purchase ice cream bars (probably a Covid thing), we did enjoy our visit to the soda fountain.
Glass-walled restrooms?
Celebration Plaza
100 Gilmer St.
Sulphur Springs, TX 75482
A glass-walled restroom is one of the craziest things I have ever encountered. I had read about these one-way glass-walled restrooms in Sulphur Springs but didn’t quite know what to expect. These two rectangular one-way glass public toilets are on the bustling courthouse square in downtown Sulphur Springs!
You can see out, see everyone driving by, standing, or walking by, but they cannot see you. Just a bit disturbing. No, I didn’t make use of the facilities here other than to take photos. The interior of the restrooms was spotlessly clean and contained everything a bathroom needed to have.
When constructed in 2012, these glass toilets cost the City $54,000! They are in the middle of a charming courthouse square with a monument to veterans, an oversized chessboard, and scattered tables and chairs. It’s a great place to gather in the center of town. The courtyard is, of course, surrounded by shops.
Leo St Clair Music Box Collection and Sinclair World War II Collection
Sulphur Springs Public Library
611 N. Davis Street
This library has a Music Box and a World War II collection. The music boxes are displayed in glass cases in a nook of the library. If you are interested in music boxes, I think you’d enjoy taking a look at them. Some are antique, but all are unique and fun to see.
Across the library, we discovered a World War II exhibit consisting of fascinating memorabilia that was enjoyable to spend a few minutes visiting.
Although not the Taj Mahal, or Eiffel Tower, we find these few sights, museums, and items of interest fun and interesting.
I know there are many other curiosities, attractions, “do not miss” places out there. We would love you to leave a comment or send a quick email letting us know about fun places you have visited because we want to see them all.
Next week we head off to West Texas on our way to New Mexico and Arizona!
That ham sandwich looks great! Would love to see, but could never use the glass wall facilities! Can you imagine how disconcerting that would be?
I want to go to the Veteran’s museum. I bet my dad would like it as well.
